All Souls’ Post Office - Workshop, Northside Church
When someone we love dies, we acutely feel the loss of their physical presence. So how do we hold this reality hand-in-hand with the energy that continues to connect us? How might consciously forming a new relationship, outside the constraints we once knew, inform our wonderings and fears about our own deaths? Email Susan below to learn more.
Dialogue with Death, Dying and the Dead - Retreat, St. Francis Retreat Center, Mepkin Abbey
Day 1, led by Marjory Zoet Bankson – we will explore ways to befriend death using stories and imagination. Day 2, led by Weston Rice - we will discuss barriers to communication between the living and the dying and address practical tips to aid communication. Day 3, led by Susan Patterson – we will explore how maintaining a relationship with a loved one beyond the veil might impact our living.
Going There - Course, Cathedral of St. Philip
This small group course provides a supportive and structured environment in which to connect, through the lens of envisioning our deaths, with the experiences that bring deep meaning to our lives. Over six two-hour sessions, Susan guides participants to contemplate their responses to questions about their own end-of-life wishes. Each session covers a different perspective - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and practical – and includes quiet, reflective time as well as open conversation. A personal binder for each participant provides a central place to record thoughts and create action steps to share thoughts, wishes and plans with others.

“If only I had the chance to have one last conversation with ….” Denial of death keeps us from having important conversations, moments and understanding with those we love – and then the opportunity is lost forever. Susan became our sherpa leading us to explore who in our lives has passed with unfinished connection – and then how we could find resolution. The journey to discovery was authentic and at times surprising. Susan is an insightful, compassionate, and creative leader.
